PRESS RELEASE -
Toledo artist Jeff Stewart
part of Detroit's Super Bowl dress up
Toledo singer/songwriter/artist Jeff Stewart's work is currently gracing the better part of city block in downtown Detroit. When local printing firm SFC Graphics got the nod to dress up the David Whitney Building at 1553 Woodward, it had the perfect idea to brighten up any cold winter day: a multi-panel reproduction of Stewart's painting, "Trees No. 1."
The Motor City is undertaking a well publicized campaign to spruce up its image for the 100,000 expected Super Bowl visitors. SFC is busy installing its new imageFence system at various sites around Detroit, consisting of art printed on lightweight plastic, designed primarily as banners around construction sites and scaffolding. In the case of the Whitney Building, the same process was applied to beautify a vacant building.
Designed by Chicago architech Daniel Burnham, the building opened in 1915, and was named after David Whithney, Jr. (1830 - 1900), a Detroit lumber and shipping tycoon. The structure's exterior was modernized in 1959, but the building was sold in 1965, and has been completely vacant since the late 1990s.
